Tigers are the largest members of the cat family and are known as courageous hunters and gracious felines. The species are easily recognized by their striped color pattern. They are admired because of their power and beauty.

The image of the Tiger is closely associated with its man-eating behaviors. Tigers are predators by nature and feed mainly on meat. Humans may occasionally fall the victims of this powerful carnivore if they should come the way of a Tiger that is in search of prey at the moment. Tigers make their presence apparent by roaring or leaving tracks on a dust trail. This animal has frequently become the subject to myths and the focus of legends and arts.

Tigers Information - Status

Once abundant on the vast territory of Asia, the species was extensively hunted for fun and for body parts that were considered one of the essential components in the treatments of the traditional Chinese medicine. The species also suffered from habitat destruction due to urban growth and agriculture development.

Nowadays, only five of the eight known species have survived. Their future is vague due to small numbers of the individuals left in the wild. Species programs are developed on an international scale to preserve this corner stone species.

Tigers have close links to such members of the cat family as leopards, lions, and jaguars. They have many similar traits, which is no wonder. These species are thought to have originated from a common ancestor that lived approximately five million years ago. The oldest proof of Tiger's existence is about 2 million years old. The fossil was found on the territory of modern Asia, some parts of China, Siberia, Japan, Sumatra, and Java. However, the range of Tigers could be much more than that described area. The species may have roamed the area of what is now Alaska. There is an opinion, however, that the fossils recognized as Tigers' remains could belong to the lion.

Tigers Information - Acquiring Knowledge to Save the Species

The never-ending interest in the Tiger is fueled now by the need to learn more about this species, its behavior, role in the wild, and requirements for functioning in the wild. This knowledge is of paramount importance to scientists and environmentalists who aim at saving the Tiger. Without this information, any Tiger conservation effort is likely to fail.

Technical development is fully employed by scientists to gather information about these large felines and learn more about their behaviors. Thus, radio tracking is a great aid in this hard, yet rewarding work. Radio tracking for keeping records on Tigers was first used in Nepal in the 1970s. A collar with a radio transmitter is placed on an individual and is the source of information on the Tiger's movements and habits.

An infrared beam, just another highly valuable method, uses a camera that shoots an animal whenever it crosses the beam. By using these pictures, the date when the picture was taken, and specific knowledge of the unique coat patterns of each animal, scientists may record Tiger numbers in the wild and gather other valuable information.

Tigers Information - What's in the Future?

It is true that the species' numbers are low at the moment. All species of the Tiger are considered endangered and are under protection laws, which bans hunting and trading in this species' parts. As concern over the future of the species grows and special measures are taken to save these magnificent animals, the future of the Tigers appears less cloudy.
