Now there animals are still alive and may be found in Russia in a region known Ussuriland. These animals are listed as endangered and they are on the verge of extinction. The commercial trade of these animals is prohibited by international law. There are less than 200 species left in the wild, and about 250 cats are found in zoos. Many felines are forced to leave their habitat due to lack of prey. Deforestation and human intrusion upon their areas have resulted in an increased number of fatal human-feline encounters.

These big cats used to live in Korea, China, and east coast of Russia and nowadays because of the deeds of the man mainly these animals are almost extinct in some places. Thus they are nearly extinct in Korea and China. In Russia, these animals are facing the grave prospect of total extermination in a few years. Their body parts, whiskers and pelts are used in Asiatic traditional medicines, and these felines are being hunted illegally. About 50 cats get killed every year, and this exceeds their birth rate.
