It is estimated that about 100,000 Tigers roamed the Earth at the beginning of the 20th century. They were found on the territory of present day Asia, Russia, Korea, and some parts of China into Pakistan. Some Tigers lived on Bali, Java, and Sumatra.

Nowadays, the situation is quite discouraging. Those who take interest in the species will hardly ever meet Tigers in Bali and Java. The species went extinct. The populations of the Tigers in China are so devastated that it is almost impossible to meet the species in the wild. The remaining populations are found mostly in national parks and preserves. The populations are scarce in their original habitats due to the habitat loss that resulted from city growth and agriculture development.

The Tiger is a territorial animal that protects its home range and rarely allows other same-sexed individuals to roam its territory. Tigers lived mostly in forested areas that provide them with appropriate hunting sites. They prefer habitats with sufficient water resources and those where prey is most abundant.

Tigers Information - Physical Description

Nowadays, there are 5 species of the Tiger that are found in various habitats and have some differences as far as physical characteristics are concerned. On the average, the Tiger stands about 1 m high and measures from 2 to 3 m. Sumatran Tigers are considered the smallest of the species, as they weigh from 75 to 140 kg. Males are generally larger than females. Bengal Tigers are the largest species. A Bengal Tiger male may weigh up to 258 kilos.

Tigers Information - Coloration

Tigers have a short fur that ranges in color from reddish to brown and creamy to white. The stripes of brown or black color vary from species to species in shape and abundance and never repeat in two individuals. Scientists make use of this peculiarity to distinguish between the Tigers and keep track of individuals. The color pattern is one of the adaptations that allow the Tiger to function efficiently in the wild. The stripes hide the animal in the dense cover and make it almost invisible to prey.

Some Bengal tigers may have white fur, which attracts many zoo visitors. These animals are found mainly in zoos and are likely to be the result of genetic mutation. Such breeding programs are not encouraged anymore since they do not contribute to the preservation of the original type of the species found in the wild. White Tigers may have blue eyes, whereas other Tigers have yellow eyes.

These fascinating animals feed mainly on meat, which is the key factor in establishing the misconception of Tigers as man-eaters. Powerful predators, Tigers face a lot of threats, habitat loss and poaching are the most destructive. Of eight known species of the Tiger, only five have survived. Nowadays, efforts are taken to preserve the remaining species in the wild and to establish the population of these magnificent felines at zoos and parks.

Depending of the species, Tigers range in weight from 165 to 242 pounds. Males may be as large as 220-310 pounds. Mainland Tigers are usually larger with the Indian Tiger that is the largest of the Tiger species. The length of the tiger's body is about 7-12 feet.
