The number of Tigers left in the wild is very low, which causes a lot of concern among environmentalists and the public. This species is disappearing at an alarming rate due to habitat destruction and poaching. According to records, there were about 100,000 individuals at the beginning of the 20th century. During the past 100 years, the Tiger population decreased dramatically. It will suffice to say that three of the known Tiger species are considered extinct.

Poaching for body parts has devastated the species' population. Up to our days, there is a lot of belief that Tiger body parts are powerful components in treatments used in traditional Chinese medicine. Hunting for pelts has also contributed to the Tiger decline.

Poaching is not the only threat to the survival of these large felines. Tigers suffer greatly from habitat destruction that has links to agriculture development and urbanization. Expansion of cities and farms has resulted in fragmentation of original tiger habitats with appropriate cover and prey. Fragmented areas reduce the chances for Tigers to meet an opposite-sexed animal. This may lead to interbreeding of various subspecies and impair the gene pool of the Tiger.

With all this in mind, environmentalists are trying to develop projects for Tiger conservation. The species is considered endangered, so hunting the Tiger and trade in Tiger body parts is illegal. Although Tigers do breed well in captivity, zoo and national parks' populations are not going to improve the situation much unless measures are taken to preserve the natural habitat of the species. It is also necessary to increase public awareness over the discouraging situation that the existence of Tigers is in peril.
