Tigers Information - Reproduction and Behavior
Tigers are solitary animals that come together only during the breeding season. A mother may be seen together with the cubs. Male Tigers have larger home ranges as compared to those of females. Male Tigers protect their home ranges and rarely allow other Tigers to settle on their territory.
The home range of a male often overlaps with the home ranges of one to seven females. Although the home range of the female is smaller than that of the male, the female should have enough prey for herself and her cubs. Tigers communicate by vocalization (roaring) and scent marks. They also leave scrapes on the trees to show the boundaries of their home range.
Tigers feed mainly on meat; they prey on the wild boar, red deer, sambar, and other animals. They hunt mostly from dusk until dawn by slowly stalking their prey and grasping it with their strong paws. Strong jaws also enable the Tiger to hold their prey. Tigers may also hunt domestic livestock and sometimes kill men.
When the female Tiger is ready to mate, some changes in the scent will appear; the male immediately feels these changes. A female is usually receptive for about three days during which copulation occurs. If the egg does not get fertilized, the female will enter the estrus cycle again in a month or two.
Tigers Information - Cubs
The gestation period in the Tiger is about 100-112 days. A litter of 2-3 cubs is common in the species. The cubs are blind and helpless at birth, yet they grow rapidly, especially males. The male does not take part in rearing the cubs and the mother alone fulfills all parental duties.
By the age of six months, the cubs are nursed completely. They learn hunting skills from their mother and by the age of 16 months, they are capable of getting foods without any help. The cubs remain with the mother until she is ready to have another litter. Tigers become sexually mature by the age of 36 months.
